No woman has presence at the media in five provinces

In a recent survey conducted by the Nai office at the media in 34 provinces of Afghanistan over working of women, has found out that women’s presence in the media has increased, contrary to pre-announced beliefs.

The purpose of the survey was to understand whether the presence of women working in the country’s media in 1396, as it was one year ago (1395), has increased or has not changed.

Based on the findings of the Nai office, the presence of women working in the country’s media has increased in 11 provinces, has not changed in any other 11 provinces and is in a steady state, in 7 provinces of the country, the presence of women in the media has decreased, and in the 5 of other provinces no woman work in the media.

In 11 provinces, the presence of women working in the media has increased are Kabul, Parwan, Logar, Paktika, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Helmand, Herat, Farah, Saripul and Badakhshan.

In 11 provinces, Panjsher, Ghazni, Laghman, Kunar, Badghis, Nimruz, Balkh, Jawzjan, Takhar, Faryab and Daikundi have not changed over presence of women in the media.

7 provinces where women’s presence in the media has fallen include the provinces of Kapisa, Wardak, Bamiyan, Khost, Samangan, Kunduz and Baghlan.

Provincial media directors and owners, in which women’s presence is declining or women are not at all, responded to the Nai office’s report that the biggest challenge is to exacerbate insecurity, the presence of individuals and  extremist groups and the financial problems of the media itself.

The provinces that women are not active in the media are including of Ghour, Paktika, Nuristan, Uruzgan and Zabul.

The Nai office, supporting open media in Afghanistan has conducted such surveys very well, and these data call the government to launch sensible policies.

The Nai office, supporting open media in Afghanistan wants from the Afghan national unity government to provide work for women in the media and remove all obstacles, like insecurity, the pressures of sexual harassment and the existence of inappropriate culture, that women have not been able work in the media.

We also call on the national unity government to pay attention to the other seven provinces that have reduced the presence of women in the media and to take serious and practical measures in removing their barriers.
